CALL FOR PRESENTATION PROPOSALS

 

Goals and Theme of the Conference

 

PRIMARY GOAL:  The primary goal of the CAID Conference 2007, to be held in Reno, NV, is to bring educators together to share their current wealth of knowledge in the area of educating deaf students.  Specific efforts are being made to make contact with and invite teachers who work with deaf students in the mainstream who often feel somewhat isolated.  (Please help us make contact with other teachers of deaf students who might not be currently connected with CAID and forward proposal and conference information to them.)

 

THEME:  The theme of the CAID Conference 2007 is "Educating Millennial Students:  Characteristics, Values and Learning Styles".  Who are "the Millennials"?  The term has been coined to identify our current K-college student population; i.e., the first generation to develop with constant exposure to a digital world.  We intend to explore how deaf and hard of hearing students may be different than previous generations due to their digitally-influenced developmental experiences (i.e., deaf students who are entering postsecondary programs today have grown up with much greater access to each other and the world through internet access and digital communication technology.)

 

BENEFITS:  Why should you attend?  It is guaranteed that participants will return home from the conference experience, enlightened by new insights into "millennial student" characteristics, motivated to try new teaching/learning strategies, and inspired by new friendships with fellow professionals who face similar challenges.   Following the conference, participants will have the ability to "stay in touch" regularly through the new CAID communication network.

 

Topic Strands

 

Proposals are requested in two basic areas: 

 

     1. General Topics that relate to characteristics of millennial students and teaching strategies

         (at any level K-college) that address their learning needs; general sessions will be

         60 or 75 minutes and,

 

     2. SIG-related Topics that address one of five CAID SIG areas of Mathematics, Science,

         English Language Arts (TELA), Mainstreaming (SWIM) and Technology/Technological Support.

         All SIG sessions will be 75 minutes.

 

Proposal Guidelines & Review Process:

 

This call for proposals is intended to be inclusive.  Therefore, do NOT hesitate to submit your ideas for a session, even if you think it might not relate to the conference themes.  Please note that we are cognizant that presenting one's ideas in a public forum can be anxiety producing!  We welcome proposals from first-time presenters and, upon request, will provide assistance in developing a proposal.  (Of course, this service is independent of the review process.)

 

Priority will be given to presentations that focus on students, are thoughtful, creative, derive from personal experience and/or are interactive; i.e., actively involve participants.

 

GENERAL PROPOSALS will be reviewed by a committee of general proposal reviewers, while, SIG PROPOSALS will be reviewed by separate SIG proposal reviewers.

 

AV Support:

 

LCD projectors will be supplied, however, presenters are expected to bring their own laptop computers.  Additional AV requirements are the responsibility of the presenter(s) and can be easily arranged with the conference hotel staff.

Again…  Proposals are due by February 16, 2007.  Individuals who submit proposals will receive notification of acceptance by March 5, 2007.

 

(Note:  Presenters will be responsible for personal travel, lodging, meals and other expenses.  In addition, upon request, conference conveners will provide presenters with formal confirmation letters of proposal acceptance.)
