Pre-Conference Workshops (CEUs)

"Promoting Student Success Kindergarten Through College"

This sequence of interactive workshops is designed to provide Teachers of Deaf and Hard of Hearing students with enhanced specific knowledge and skills in the area of teaching and learning that promote student success K - 12. Specific learning objecitves from each of the three workshop instructors will be shared with participants. The 7.5 hours of instruction will conclude with participants establishing an action plan to be implemented upon retturning to their respective teaching/learning environments. Participants will document their new applications and post a detailed description of outcomes on a discussion board. (An additional 2.5 hours will be credited for a total of 10.0 hours or 1 CEU for those wish to recieve credit for this professional development experience.)

The Pre-Conference session will be held on June 20, 2011 (Monday) from 9 AM to 4 PM.

These workshops are for people needing CEUs toward professional certification.

You are welcome to attend the pre-conference workshops even if you do not need CEUs.

For those of you who want to attend on Monday only, there is a modest charge:

$50.00 includes all three workshops
$25.00 (optional) CEU fee

If you registered for the entire conference, pre-conference workshops are included.

In either case, you MUST REGISTER for the pre-conference workshops.

A Sequence of 3 Outstanding Workshops by 3 Outstanding Teachers

Dr. Larry Qunisland
Title: Promoting Student Success K-college:  Utilizing Experiential Learning Principles to Maximize Student Learning at All Developmental Levels
Abstract: This workshop will kick off the preconference series by focusing on teaching behaviors that maximize student learning at all levels of instruction.  Participants will leave this session with experiential learning tools that enhance student perception, cognitive processing, and cognitive fluency at different stages of development.

Dr. Christopher Kurz
Title: Family Math for All Grades
Abstract: The primary goal of family math is to inform parents about the role of mathematics in their child's education. This workshop is designed specifically for informal learning inside and out of the classroom. Participants will learn strategies/activities to bring parents into the school to engage in hands-on and real-world math activities with their children and to provide parents with ways to help their children with math at home.

Title: Language and Literacy Instruction in Content Areas
Abstract: This workshop will briefly discuss theories related to language and literacy development of deaf students. An overview of the Common Core State Standards will then be introduced with language and literacy goals and objectives tied to content instruction. Finally, the majority of the time will be introducing and modeling various language and literacy instruction strategies you can take back to your classrooms in the fall.

1:30 - 3:30 pm     Session 3  (Dr. Susan Lane-Outlaw)

The workshop sequence will conclude with a processing activity where participants review and document new learnings and significant insights. Participants will then document and commit to experimentation with new techniques and strategies with their repsective students when returning to their home teaching/learning environments. A "CAID Preconference Discussion Board" will be established for the purpose of maintaining contact with participants and for the participants to file reports that document the outcomes of their experimentation.
