  • See the Sound: Visual Phonics Workshop
    For Teachers, Speech-Language Pathologists, and Reading Specialists

    This workshop is designed for people interested in learning a system that utilizes a combination of tactile, kinesthetic, visual and auditory feedback to assist in developing phonemic awareness, speech production, and reading skills with children who are deaf or hard of hearing.

  • Sharing Books Using ASL and Deaf Cultural Literacy Practices: Preschool-Grade 8
    For Teachers, Librarians, Aides, Day Care Providers, Interpreters, Future Teachers, and Parents

This workshop focuses on how to share books using ASL and deaf cultural literacy practices with young deaf and hard of hearing students.

Participants will learn how to:

  • Share books as a visual and spatial experience
  • Translate English text into ASL in comprehensible ways
  • Scaffold children's learning during book sharing
  • Make connections between ASL and English within this context

Each literacy practice will be introduced and demonstrated, followed by opportunities for collaborative, guided practice using excerpts from various children's books. Additional topics will include selecting appropriate books and materials, elements of ASL, and topics based on the students' needs and interests.

  • Going with the Resistance: A Paradoxical Approach to Power Struggles with Teens
    For Teachers, Dorm Staff, Mental Health Professionals, and Parents

Deaf and hearing adolescents are similar in that they both assert their independence by questioning and resisting authority. Adolescents' resistance to authority often builds momentum, resulting in major struggles for control and autonomy that ultimately damage these relationships. This workshop takes a closer look at these power struggles and identifies some creative and unorthodox techniques that promote cooperation. Participants will leave with practical solutions that can calm the storm raging between adolescents and the adults in their lives.

  • American Sign Language, English and Math: How Does It All Jive?
    For Teachers, Aides, Day Care Providers, Educational Interpreters, Future Teachers, and Parents

This workshop centers around using conceptually accurate American sign Language to strengthen mathematics instruction for deaf and hard of hearing students.  Topics include classroom issues in mathematics instruction with a foucs on ASL number systems and working on word problems.

CEU credit is offered for all of the above sessions.
